SCUBA Camp Additional InfoWe are really excited about offering a SCUBA diving class/ camp this summer! We have partnered with Discovery Diving, a well known local dive shop in order to offer this class. There are some additional things we want to make you aware of. Although this is held during the camp season, at camp, this will be a different type of camp. There is about 45 hours of instruction and diving time required to get the certification, which means that campers will probably not have the opportunity to go sailing, do arts and crafts, and some of the other "normal" camp activities. Last Blast is our regular senior high camp (offered the last week of our summer season). If your camper is interested in sailing, arts and crafts and other "camp" activities we suggest that they attend Last Blast. Campers can attend both the SCUBA camp and Last Blast if they wish. The book for this class is included in the class fee. This book does include the laminated dive tables. It is suggested that the book be read before the participant starts the class. This will be shipped to you before camp. You will also receive a letter in the mail explaining about the class with a detailed medical form that will need to be signed by a doctor. There are some conditions that may prevent certain participants from participating in this class. If your child is unable to take the class because of a medical condition, the camp fee and class fee will be returned to you. A mask, fins and snorkle are required for this class. These can be rented from Discovery Diving for $10 a day. However, masks are apparently hard to fit and the first part of the class is on how to find a good fitting, good quality mask. It is suggested that student's purchase a mask that fits them. These will be available from Discovery Diving (after they learn how to get one that fits) for $40-$80. If you wish to purchase a mask before the camper arrives, we suggest that you go to a dive shop (not a general sports shop or discount store) to get a mask that is good quality and will properly fit. Fins and snorkle are easier to get a "close" fit on, so if desired these can be rented for the week. Weather premitting, campers will be in the water 7 times. The first two sessions are in our pool where they will learn the basics. They will then do four dives off of Radio Island (between Morehead City and Beaufort). This is where they will show their skills and get their certification. The last dive will be on a real ship wreck. They will go diving with guides and they will get to experience what a real, open water dive on a wreck is like. Campers under 15 will recieve their PADI Junior Open Water Certification. Campers over 15 will receive their PADI Open Water Certification. If a camper gets thier PADI Junior Open Water Certification and wishes change this to a PADI Open Water Certification after their 15th birthday, they just need to send in their information with a $20 fee and a new certificate will be issued. Because we are planning to dive on Friday, this camp will end on Friday at approximately 5:30 pm. No dinner will be served on Friday (but there are several good resteraunts you are welcome to visit, or feel free to bring a picnic dinner). Once you are done with your class, you can go diving! Discovery Diving offers many local dives (see their website at www.discoverydiving.com for their schedule), or check with your local dive shop for trips they maybe offering. ![]() All pictures courtsey of Discovery Diving. |
